From Dust – Review : 3.5 Stars

“FROM DUST” has officially arrived on XBLA in the 2011 Summer of Arcade. It offers a mix of gameplay and strategy of art that literally breathes some new life into the genre.

With the power of the Gods, players must help a small tribe of humans through difficult terrain in a variety of landscapes. Using a power known as “the breath”, you can breathe in and out items such as water, dirt and lava, once you have inhaled the maximum amount that can be exhaled is also to carve a new path and reform land. As you progress through the game to new dangers come to light, new skills and factors that modify the game and the demands of progress.

The totems are scattered through the levels, which are made with a mixture of soil, water, mountains and vegetation. You must reach each totem to build a people which in turn comes with a power of the gods. A provisional amount of time, you may find yourself being able to extinguish the fire, evaporate the water, or use the “encouragement” to take more than one item. The use of these powers are not only fun, but can turn the tide and save you from certain death when used properly.

“FROM DUST” is a game to relax to play in the comings and goings at the beginning, and you can reform the land as much as you want; without worry. But as you progress, you will find the game difficulty increases by adding in different situations, including forest fires, tsunami, and uncertain lags in the country itself. Sometimes it can be frustrating, but on the other hand, if you pay attention you will see models and realize the right way to finish a level without problems.

While “FROM DUST” has only a single player experience for its price level of 1200MS Points, it seems that there are a lot of content to play, however, some of them are released to perform certain tasks or to new heights in the levels standard. You can unlock new memories of the tribe, which are bodies of texts that provide a background story. It will also open challenges to play a different dispute. These require certain tasks to complete as soon as possible – some of which can become infuriating until you understand how to fill them.

It’s a visually appealing game, although I can not help but feel a lot of screen shots shown in the past is to cut scenes or conceptual art. Under no circumstances is the game ugly, but the camera control is generally limited; stopping you from getting some really great views and angles. Textures and details are very well done, but you often do not notice unless you zoom in – but when you’re zoomed in close, you can not actually play the game. Whatever the issue of the environment the camera “FROM DUST” is very fine and the world feels and looks sublime.

The soundtrack on the other hand, seems to be a weak point of the game. I spent more time engaged in the management of land and water I hear background noise, if I remember hearing the incoming waves of a tsunami and I remember the screams of my tribe as they took on numerous occasions. Banjo-Kazooie Tribe style noise that lets you know when they are moving or when they are trapped by the guidance system sometimes frustrating AI. Apart from a bit of background noise and sound effects basic, “FROM DUST” is a fairly quiet game, but I do not think you know it.

“FROM DUST” is certainly an interesting videogame and one that is in a fun to play, but it is not without problems. The clumsy camera can make it difficult to select a character on the map quickly, and the AI does not seem to make roads more evident. However, the game is appropriate in relation to a variety of new features and subsequent levels to keep the game to get stale. If you’re trying to win the game 7-9 hours I’d estimate the average player, but the Challenge mode to tack on a couple more if you do not discover all the tricks immediately. Overall, “FROM DUST” is a fascinating game that is definitely worth a look, if it has sparked your interest in recent months.
