Deus Ex: Human Revolution – REVIEW : 4.5 STARS

“DEUS EX : HUMAN REVOLUTION” is the prequel to the famous “DEUS EX”, which changed the face of the first-person games on the PC. The successor, “DEUS EX : INVISIBLE WAR” left the fans of the series with a bitter taste in the mouth, and a fear that their beloved series would end on a negative note. Fortunately for us (or for me anyways), Eidos Montreal decided to create a game that would live up to the stature of the fantastic original game, “DEUS EX”. Is “DEUS EX : HUMAN REVOLUTION” the beacon of hope and savior of the show? To put it simply, yes… yes it is.

“DEUS EX : HUMAN REVOLUTION” is set in a dystopian future, where the use of cybornetics  is increasing and those who oppose it want to do everything possible to destroy it. You play as Adam Jensen, a former SWAT officer turned security chief for Sarif Industries, one of the leading companies cybornetic technology. On the eve of announcing a breakthrough that will revolutionize cybornetic technology.  A group of highly trained mercenaries attack the science labs at Sarif Industries, killing everyone and leave you for dead. To save his life, Adam Jensen is augmented with cybornetic enhancements.

So begins his journey through a vast conspiracy that will take you around the world in an attempt to discover the truth behind the events of that night and know who you really are. Along the way, you can expect to meet and interact with many interesting people and perhaps learn what it means to be human. This is a story that will keep you in suspense until the end.

Games of choice is one of those bullet points on a box that makes you believe that your actions have consequences, but in fact most of the game, which claim to give you a choice usually only give the illusion of one. This is not the case with “DEUS EX : HUMAN REVOLUTION”. It was something the original game, was able to claim. Choice is the most powerful part of the gameplay, but it’s also how you deal with each scenario as the choices are relevant to the consequences that affect both you and your history. To kill some higher-ranking individuals or disrespect individuals leads to changes in game that sometimes radically change the courses you take. Even small choices you need to do to influence you in some way, and although it might not necessarily be a causal relationship, it can certainly create consequences later down the line.

When you first arrive at Sarif industries, the chief, Mr. Sarif says that terrorists have infiltrated some of their production facilities and took hostages. David Sarif commands you to reach the helipad as soon as possible to handle the issue. At this point, that without even really realizing it, you are making quite a big decision. As with any RPG you have  the freedom to walk Sarif Industries building, taking breaks all in some offices and read a lot of e-mail, all while the operation is waiting for you to commence. But they do not explain that the longer you stay at Sarif Industries the risk becomes greater and the hostages can actually die. Show heliport too late, and Sarif will tell you that the terrorists executed the hostages.

This is the first choice instance, and radically changes the way the story unfolds, and that in itself is a revolution.

The choices and the consequences are just as impressive, and thankfully the ”DEUS EX : HUMAN REVOLUTION” gives you the ability to define your character and choose your style of play. The game focuses on four pillars of gameplay: Social Conversation, Hacking, Stealth and Combat. Each pillar produces different results, but when you combine the columns that you are greeted with a truely unique experience. At the beginning of the game you are given the basics, and you gain XP missions, but side-quests will give you the opportunity to spend points for Praxis, the game’s version of experience points, there are several different schemes and design layouts for your character. Though these augmentations will help determine which road you take your character down, they are limited and in the course of the game you will never be “maxed out”.

If you’re the kind of player who wants to take it easy, and hide in the shadows whileavoiding all the enemies.. then you probably want to invest in eye augmentations, which allow you to see through walls, and mark the enemy radar. It may also be smart to invest in a cloaking shield, and perhaps spend praxis on foot augmentations, which allow you to run silently. If you’re looking for a more combat experience; you should be willing to invest in skin augmented armor & arm augmentations which increase your strength and load capacity. You may even want to invest in some special abilities, such as the typhoon blast, which allows you to send explosives in a 360 ° radius.  And for those who want to talk their way out of situations you certainly want to invest in social augmentations, which shows a full range of information in your HUD, and how to interact with them to achieve your goal.  Thus becoming more of a silver tongue than a carbon fiber fist.  Last but not least those who wish to become mired hackers can focus on the three main extensions of information, which allows to hack with speed and cunning results.

These gameplay options are further enhanced by the superb level design, giving you room for any style of play Abundant valves, objects to move, ladders and hidden areas are scattered throughout the environment and allows you to use the skill augmentations you’ve chosen to achieve your goals. There really is’nt a wrong way to play, and with experimentation, you will eventually find the style that suits you best. Personally, I decided to go with a mix of stealth, hacking and talk and found it very rewarding. Of course, I also made my character a little further by pursuing a peaceful path that does not involve killing anyone minus bosses. This was by far the most rewarding experience I’ve had in a game in a while. It was a breath of fresh air in a world first-person shooters put a gun in your hand and basically forces you to pull the trigger to move forward.

Unfortunately, this power of choice that is given to the player, and is removed only in fighting the bosses. These battles, in contrast to all other scenarios in the game, do not allow you to choose how to approach them. There is one way, and it is death by lead and explosions.   A player who approaches the game like a first-person shooter does not necessarily have a problem with that, but those who approach the game stealthly, as I did, will complain that fighting the bosses is the only option.

This becomes particularly a problem when you do not have the proper augmentations for a fight against a boss because of the path you have chosen to take. Personally, I do not see why the boss battles were in the game all together, but if the developers felt necessary, so they needed to think of a better way to implement them. It does not help that the fighting itself is poorly thought out and executed.

The world revolution of man shows a bleak future where the rich are rich, the poor are poor and the endless struggle to increase the threat to destroy everything. The only gold and black color palette really helps create a unified vision across many different locations games. The world is very well done and feels really lived in large amounts of space, books, papers, trash and many other fragments are scattered throughout the world, giving a feeling dirty and rundown it is true his version of the future. It is especially evident when walking through the streets of Hengshi. Asian culture infuses the area really helps make it one. Unique and truly feel that you are there small grocery stores and online pharmacies in the streets, as people wander aimlessly in search of assistance and purpose. It is a world that is so well done that it is very likely to be lost in it and that in itself is amazing.

Unfortunately, the world is a beautiful visual style and atmosphere creates a nuisance, sometimes in games ruin. First of all, the game character animations are pretty rough ride, and Gambit OK to be real bad. Moreover, it does not help that the synchronization of the face and lip animation is so bad that can get you out of the experience most of the time. In addition, there are some minor frame rate problems, for some strange ragdoll animations and long load times, but these things are not as devastating as a bad lip sync and animation. Fortunately, the story and characters are so well developed and engaging that you forget the poor animation.

While revolutions human history “and the world are beautifully made, this is the soundtrack that really brings everything together. A score of amazing sweep McCann really capture the atmosphere dark and cyberpunk. Higher scores orchestrated panoramic scenes of high tension, which gives the right amount of emotion. On the other hand, walking through the game world is accompanied by a calm, however, the band broke methodically. This is one of the few video game soundtracks you want to hear and again, especially the main theme.

Again and again, has become something of a lost art in the gaming world today. There was a time we would play games over and over again, but today is the increase in multiplayer has changed direction again and again. “DEUS EX” on the other hand, has no multiplayer. You will not shoot your friends online or meet to take down the bad guys, but you will be deprived of a large enough single player games. One that took me about 37 hours to complete my first playthrough, and I guess the average player can expect to have played the last from 25 to 40 hours depending on how thorough you are, and how of side quests you can participate i. the amount of variation in both the story and the gameplay is what makes “DEUS EX”, so again and again. The scenarios could play themselves very different from each other in so many ways. Friends in a game through enemies can be in another. It is impossible to experience everything the game has to offer in one playthrough, and that’s what makes “DEUS EX”, so remarkable.

“DEUS EX : HUMAN REVOLUTION” is in many ways as a result of the original fans had hoped. He tells a compelling story that focuses on the themes of ambiguity humanism, philosophy and ethics that will have you glued to the screen until the bitter end. It’s a game that allows you to experiment and choose who you are, how you interact with the world and ultimately what you want. Although not as revolutionary as its predecessor, it is not so well designed and free-flowing, the revolution of man is always a game that gives a tremendous sense of freedom that is rarely found in the game and is more that freedom, return “DEUS EX” to its rightful place as one of the biggest game franchises.
